Ebonised chair. Vinegar is added to steel wool and the resulting solution when applied to a timber with high tannin content turns it black. The higher the tannin content the darker the effect. When oiled with danish oil the grain comes back through the finish.

Unnamed oak chair pre ebonising. More details and pictures to follow……
First dry assembly of oak chair frame. A mixure of traditional and modern jointing, the bottom rail is ‘domino’ jointed with the top being handcut wedged through tennons that are pinned with a dowel for maximum strength.
Laminated oak rail. The glue has been stained black to avoid glue lines due to the final ebonised finish.
Stage one of curved rails. Steam bent 3mm strips of oak clamped round a former. Steam bent first before lamination because of the acute radius of the curve. The second part of the former to be used for the lamination process.
Quick set of candlestick holders whittled up in the workshop.
